Athens Airport to the Acropolis: Metro, Bus, Taxi, and Cost
Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos, ATH) is approximately 33km from the centre of Athens and the Acropolis. There are four main transport options: the Metro, the X95 express bus, a taxi, or a private rideshare. All are reliable; your choice depends on budget, luggage, and travel time priorities.
Metro from Athens Airport to the Acropolis
The Metro (Line 3, blue line) runs directly from Athens Airport station to central Athens without any changes required. Trains depart every 30 minutes (more frequently at peak times) and the journey to Syntagma station takes approximately 40-45 minutes. Single ticket cost: 10.00 EUR per person (as of 2024). Return ticket: 18.00 EUR. The ticket also includes 90 minutes of travel on all other Athens public transport modes. From Syntagma, take Line 2 (red line) one stop to Acropolis station (2 minutes). From Acropolis station, the main entrance is a 5-7 minute walk uphill. Total door-to-door journey from airport arrivals to Acropolis entrance: approximately 55-65 minutes. The Metro is the most affordable and stress-free option, particularly if you have carry-on luggage only. Trains have luggage space and air conditioning. The airport station is clearly signposted within the arrivals hall.
X95 Express Bus from Athens Airport to Syntagma
The X95 express bus runs 24 hours a day between Athens Airport and Syntagma Square, making it the only public transport option available during late-night or very early-morning arrivals when the Metro is not running (Metro hours are approximately 5:30am to midnight). Journey time: 50-70 minutes depending on traffic (can be significantly longer during rush hour). Ticket cost: 6.00 EUR per person, payable on the bus or from the ticket machines/kiosk at the airport bus stop. The bus stop is outside the arrivals hall, clearly signposted. Buses depart every 15-20 minutes. From Syntagma, you can walk to the Acropolis (25-30 minutes through Plaka) or take the Metro one stop on Line 2 to Acropolis station.
Taxi from Athens Airport to the Acropolis
Taxis from Athens Airport operate on a fixed-rate system to central Athens zones. The standard fixed fare from the airport to the Acropolis area (zones 1-2) is 38 EUR during daytime hours (5am-midnight) and 54 EUR at night (midnight-5am). This is per taxi, not per person -- so for two or more travellers it is very competitive with the Metro. Official taxis are yellow and must use the meter or agreed fixed rate. You can find official taxis at the dedicated taxi rank outside arrivals -- do not accept offers from drivers inside the terminal. Journey time to the Acropolis area is typically 35-50 minutes depending on traffic, and significantly longer during Athens rush hour (8-10am, 5-7pm). Bolt and FreeNow rideshares are available from Athens Airport and are sometimes cheaper than official taxis -- check the app for a price estimate before deciding.
Private Transfer from Athens Airport
Pre-booked private transfers are available from numerous companies and through the GetYourGuide platform. A private transfer typically costs 40-60 EUR for a standard saloon car (up to 4 passengers) and 60-90 EUR for a larger vehicle. The advantage is a fixed price, a driver with your name on a board in arrivals, and direct door-to-door service without navigating the Metro or bus system with luggage. For families, groups, or first-time visitors to Athens, a private transfer can be worth the extra cost for the simplicity alone.
