Plaka Neighbourhood → Acropolis of Athens
Plaka is the neighbourhood draped across the north and northeast slopes of the Acropolis hill. If you are staying in Plaka or exploring its streets, the Acropolis main entrance is literally 5–10 minutes away. The walk uphill through the narrow streets is itself one of the great experiences of Athens.
Step-by-Step Directions
- 1
From central Plaka (Adrianou Street), walk south toward the hill
The Acropolis is always visible above Plaka — you will naturally orient toward it. From Adrianou Street, walk up through the winding streets. The marble paving makes the uphill clear.
- 2
Continue through Anafiotika for the most scenic route
Anafiotika is the tiny whitewashed island-village built into the north face of the Acropolis rock. It is Athens' most photogenic alley. Head through here and you emerge near the Beule Gate (the northwest entrance).
- 3
For the main entrance: descend to Dionysiou Areopagitou and follow signs
The main (south) entrance is on Dionysiou Areopagitou. From the heart of Plaka, this is a 5–8 minute walk. Most visitors with luggage or mobility issues use this entrance as it has an elevator.
💡 Insider Tips
- → Wear comfortable flat shoes — Plaka's marble streets are beautiful but slippery, especially after rain
- → The Anafiotika route via the north slope is steeper but more atmospheric — allow an extra 10 minutes
- → There is a secondary west entrance (Beule Gate) approached from the Thissio side — easier walking surface
- → Plaka restaurants are ideal for a post-visit lunch — head back down after the Acropolis and pick a spot away from Adrianou Street for better quality and lower prices
