Athens Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) → Acropolis of Athens
Getting from Athens Airport to the Acropolis is straightforward — the Metro takes you directly to the Acropolis station in under an hour. The journey is one of the best airport-to-city-centre connections in Europe: air-conditioned, reliable, and with no traffic delays.
Step-by-Step Directions
- 1
Follow signs to the Metro inside the airport terminal
The Metro station is on Level -1 (basement) of the main terminal. Follow blue Metro signs from Arrivals. It takes about 5 minutes to walk from baggage claim.
- 2
Take Metro Line 3 (Blue) toward Agia Marina
Buy a Metro ticket at the machines: €9 for a single journey (valid 90 minutes across all transport). The ticket is valid on buses and tram if you need to continue. Trains run every 30 minutes; first departure around 5:30am, last around 11:30pm.
- 3
Ride to Syntagma station (8 stops, approx. 40 minutes)
Syntagma is the main transfer hub. The train passes through the city centre — you'll see Lycabettus Hill from the window as you approach.
- 4
Change to Metro Line 2 (Red) at Syntagma
Follow signs to Line 2 / Red Line. Platforms are one level down. No new ticket needed — your 90-minute ticket covers the transfer.
- 5
Ride one stop to Acropolis station
Just one stop (3 minutes). The Acropolis Metro station itself displays ancient artifacts found during excavation — worth a look.
- 6
Exit and walk to the Acropolis main entrance (5 minutes)
Take the exit to Dionysiou Areopagitou. Turn right and walk south along the pedestrianised promenade. The main entrance to the Acropolis is clearly signposted. Total walk from station: about 400 metres.
